Connecticut-based agency expands to the West coast with the addition of its new Managing Partner

San Francisco, June 29, 2010 – Mediatavern, an independent digital marketing agency and animation studio, announced today that Geoff Gougion has joined the Agency as Managing Partner, expanding its footprint to the West coast. He will serve as one of three Partners in the firm and will oversee its business strategy and growth as well as its West coast operations.

“I am incredibly excited about joining the team at Mediatavern,” said Gougion. “Mediatavern has an outstanding record of business growth and has developed great partnerships with an impressive group of global brands, including Yahoo!, Open Skies Airlines (part of British Airways) and Fox Television Group. Its commitment to leading digital innovation, and to the development of original content through its animation studio, has it poised to emerge as a true thought-leader and a powerhouse in the industry.”

Gougion, a veteran marketing executive and digital leader, spent the last four years at Tribal DDB where he was Managing Director of Tribal’s west coast operations in Los Angeles and San Francisco. During his tenure at Tribal DDB, Gougion won, and managed, significant relationships with (PRODUCT) RED, McAfee, SOYJOY and SunPower. His success with McAfee in particular garnered a lot of attention as it was one of Tribal’s first, high-profile, through-the-line AOR wins, and the work he oversaw was recently awarded a Gold and two Silver Effies.

“Mediatavern has seen more than 200% growth over the past three years, and adding Geoff as a Partner will help us continue this growth and accelerate it to a new level ,” said Josh Newman, Founder & Managing Partner. “He is a true digital marketing visionary and I am thrilled to have him on board.”

Prior to joining Tribal DDB, Gougion worked in Brand Management at Nestle where he led online marketing for the CPG giant’s North American infant formula business. Before Nestle, he worked in corporate development for Interpublic Group’s top lobbying firm, Cassidy & Associates. Gougion began his career in digital marketing at Modem Media in Connecticut and in Paris. At Modem Media, Gougion led some of the world’s leading brands, including AT&T, Starwood Hotels and IBM, as they entered the digital space. Gougion earned his BSBA in International Business and Marketing from Georgetown University and his MBA from Thunderbird.

“This is a really great day for our Agency,” said Douglas Rowell, Managing Partner and Chief Creative Officer of Mediatavern. “We are extremely proud of our Agency’s growth, but even more proud of our ability to continually produce innovative and compelling work for our client partners. Having Geoff join us really propels our strategic capabilities and offers significant opportunities to grow our business, increase the quality of our work and deliver even better results for our clients.”

This has to be one of best shot videos I have seen in a long time. Its a mini documentary on they dying art of large scale hand painted advertising. A craft that is very rapidly becoming extinct, being replaced by quicker and cheaper forms of large scale advertising, primarily Vinyl. This dying art form is equal parts beautiful and dangerous as these artist take to skyline to work, sometimes hanging 60 feet over the street, being bombarded by wind and rain, only stopping when the job is complete. Words really don’t this video justice, you have to watch to appreciate what these people do.

An internet “kill switch” has been proposed by Senator Joe Lieberman, that would essentially give the President the authority to shut down portions of the internet. Huh? This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard since Ted Stevens claimed the internet “is a series of tubes” The bill states that broadband providers, search engine or software firms that the government selects “shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed”. Where are we? You know who else has “security” measures like this…China. Things seem to be getting a little bit out of hand in D.C.

Since the iPad was announced, Flash has been under an almost constant attack from a number of fronts, with many declaring it a dead platform. No surprise there. People have been after Flash for years. But the Flash community has been firing back. here are a couple great responses to the proclamation of Flash’s early demise.

Everyone to their bases – Flash is under attack!
Jens C Brynildsen at Flash Magazine

Flash is Dead… Long Live Flash
Devon O. Wolfgang at onebyoneblog

And some further looks at the points levied against Flash:

Sympath for the Devil
John Nack on Adobe

And another breakdown of why Flash will lead the charge and HTML 5 (and more importantly the browsers that serve it) will always play catch-up:

“The World is Moving to HTML 5″ and Other Fancy Flights
Richard Leggett On New Media

and a look at HTML 5 video support and it’s current issues

HTML 5 and a Brave Flash Free Open World? Uh..Not So Fast
Create Digital Motion

I think these taken together form good support for the theory that:

Change in the way interactive on the web works is well under way, but has a long way to go. Still never a bad thing to be at the head of the pack that bringing up the rear

Flash will move forward past it’s current incarnation into something no one might yet see, but something we the Flash Developers should be on the lookout for
